Relay for Life has been around for a very long time, and differs on the small points from community to community, but there are several elements in each area’s event that are standard parts of the fund raiser. Those features are pretty much identical no matter where you choose to attend a Relay for Life event:

because cancer never sleeps, they last all night

teams of eight to fifteen people are the most typical participants (such as a company team from ADT or another group)

there is a Survivor dinner

the relay begins with a Survivor Lap

the Opening Lap comes next, with teams carrying their banners

a luminary candle light vigil honors those who have lost the battle with cancer

the Closing Ceremony and Awards take place at the end, and is sometimes referred to as the Fight Back Ceremony

Recently, Colleges Against Cancer has begun running Relay for Life events on college campuses across the United States. The college campus relays are usually tremendously successful in raising large amounts of money for the fund raiser event due to the enthusiasm of college students and their families as well as Alumni. The college campus events are highly publicized both before and after the event and gain much attention from the broad surrounding communities.

On College campuses, the event is typically organized by a team of student and faculty Chairpersons who manage each of the above listed aspects of the whole event. There may be a Vigil Chair, a Survivor Chair, an Opening Lap Chair, a Luminary Chair, and a Closing Ceremony Chair. This way, each person presides over a very narrow, specific segment of the event and therefore things run smoothly.

Thanks to the help of college organized Relay for Life events, even greater attention has been directed towards the fight against cancer and the need for funding for modern cancer research that will lead to a cure.

Each year on November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day. There are many special services, events, and parades that are held in honor of the men and the women who have served in the United States military in order to protect our freedoms. This day might be filled with plenty of fun events, but at the same time, it is a serious day. A day that we should reflect and respect all that we have in this country thanks to the courageous people that have fought for it to be so.

Our soldiers, past and present, are deserving of honor and the utmost respect all days of the year, but especially so on Veterans Day. Remember that today as you go about in your community. If you do come across a veteran or active military person, thank him or her. The sacrifice that they and their families give is one that many people will never understand, and your appreciation will mean so much.

Does your community plan any events to honor and pay a tribute to local veterans? If not, you can change that for the next year. Contact local administrators about how to set up a parade or event for next year’s Veterans Day.

In towns and communities all over the country more and more citizens are making the effort to support local businesses and buy local goods. There are even locales that are taking on initiatives to promote buying local so that small businesses in the area can get a boost. The efforts are not going unnoticed, which is great news. Many small and independent businesses are having great success. Since the year 2005 the campaigns for buying local has almost doubled. That might be due to the current economy, but whatever the reason it is helping communities to get back on their feet.

There are many reasons that you should buy local. They are reflected in the infographic that you see below. One of the main reasons that you should consider spending your money on local goods is that it puts more money back into your local economy. You will notice that small local businesses in your community help to produce more income and taxes, while also providing more jobs than the so called “big box” stores. Local businesses are also more eager to give back to their community when they can. They are concerned about their community’s future and the citizens. Buying local has never been more important than it is now, so show some love to your community.

I think the answer just might be a big “yes!” At least that is the case from what I have been seeing in the communities that I have visited lately. It is even true of my own community. When people come together and show that they care not just for their own health, but for the health of all of the people around them too. I feel like the news and other media just reports on negative things like how unhealthy and overweight Americans are, so I wanted to share some positive thoughts. I mean, not every one is one Big Mac burger away from a coronary artery bypass surgery. There are a lot of people who are healthy and happy, and those people want to see the same things for their neighbors. The things below prove that communities are trying to be more healthy overall.

Free Exercise Classes. In my own small community I have seen so many new exercise classes being offered to residents of the area. Not only are they available to all of the people of the area, but they are free! Things like yoga, Zumba, and even kickboxing are making appearances in community centers and churches so that residents can get some exercise and live healthier.

Healthy Eating Seminars. A couple of local pharmacies and groceries are offering seminars on eating healthy for area residents. Like the exercise classes, these are free classes that will teach people about eating healthy and cooking healthy.

Going Local. A lot of restaurants are spreading the word about he fact that they use fresh and local produce and meats. This encourages the community to do the same. There are even more farmer’s markets in my area that offer up all the local best foods right at your fingertips.

Pet Care Training. The people of the community are not the only ones getting healthy advice and options in the community. Many places have training for pets and clinics that will help citizens stay informed on things like proper care and spay and neutering pets. A lot of the training sessions can be found free, and there are some spay and neuter clinics that are free as well. Those clinics do accept donations though so they can fund the operations.

It is that time again! The air is starting to get a crispness to it in the evenings, the pumpkin spice latte is back at Starbucks, and it is finally time to go back to school. All over the country parents and kids, students of all ages, and college students are making sure they have all the essentials that they need to have a successful and exciting school year. Are you or your children ready to go back? Sometimes preparing for a new school year can seem a little bit overwhelming, but it is just one of those things that you have to do. To get ready for this year, I have an infographic for you to look at to make sure that you have done all you need to get ready.

You’ll also find some really interesting back to school facts like:

For books and supplies each year, college students spend approximately $1,137

For fear of being bullied 160,000 children stay home from school

The average cost of school lunch is between $2.70 and 3.10.

An average teenager requires 9.5 hours of sleep, but only gets an average of 7.4 hours

What’s Your Cause?

There has always been a strong need for a surrounding community in all types of areas. Even centuries or so ago there were villages that made up communities where people would not just work for themselves only, but all the citizens would work together to strive for one goal. That goal was to grow and become a stronger community. Unfortunately in today’s dog eat dog and narcissistic society you will find that a lot of people are no longer out to help their fellow man, but only to succeed and advance their own life. This is not the case, of course, for all people, but it does seem to be a trend. With the economic state of the United States in such shambles and people left with nothing–no jobs, homes, food, et cetera–it is the perfect time for you to take action and reach out in your very community. It is time to stand together as a village and reach one goal: that the community become stronger as a whole. Think about how wonderful it would be to live in a safe neighborhood instead of for instance, being forced into having home security in Alabama. If you are ready to take action and help those around you, there are many ways that you can get involved. If you are not sure where to get started, then here are some examples for you depending on what type of help you would like to offer.

Houses – There are many people who unfortunately cannot afford to have proper housing or shelter. This is something that is quietly plaguing the United States and organizations like Habitat for Humanity are taking action. This organization helps to build homes that are not only suitable to live in, but also affordable. MOst of their efforts depend on the donations of money and time that are given by generous volunteers, and they are always looking for more help.

Food – Sadly there are people that you may work with or go to church with that you would never know cannot afford to get food or groceries and they have been forced to eat at bread baskets or get food from food banks. It is becoming more and more common and the food banks are in desperate need of donations of all kinds. That means time, money, and/or food donations.

Get involved in your community to see it become a better place than ever before. Now more than ever it is time to stand up with your fellow man and offer support in any way you possibly can.

North America may not be the largest continent, but there sure is a lot of variance to the lands. Think about it, the continent of North America has Mexico at the south, the United States, and to the North, CAnada. Beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, wetlands, deserts, ranges, tundras, and everything else in between can be found in the three countries that make up this vast and exciting continent.

While there is such beauty found all over the North American continent, there are also a lot of people that can contribute to wastes and impact the environment and its natural resources. There are many things that are affected when the environmental resources are being used, not just humans, but wildlife as well. Wild forestry, wetlands, and fresh water are all ecosystems and resources that are extremely important, not just to North America, but also to the entire world.

Canada alone is a contributor to a large amount of ecosystems and natural resources for the entire globe. You can take a look at that below in the infographic. Also take notice to the environmental footprints by the country. Very interesting, indeed!

Early this week, a small town in Iowa is preparing for the worst possibility of flooding in the area. The town is Hamburg, Iowa. It is located in the southwestern part of Iowa, obviously near the swelling Missouri River. Preparations are happening around the clock to help protect the town from flooding if the levees do not hold and if other fixes happen to fail the town. If all attempts to keep the flooding at bay are unsuccessful, they are prepared for the town to be under water.

One of the main projects that the town is working on together is creating a second wall to protect the existing barriers from breaking. However, if this project, or one of the others does not actually work, then estimates are showing that up to eight feet of water might cover the town for an entire month long period. This flooding of the Missouri River is going to truly put all of the dams and things to a sure-fire test like it never has. Hopefully, all of the hard work going into it will protect the citizens of the town of Hamburg.

On Sunday, close to 600 citizens of Hamburg were asked to evacuate their homes, and in Missouri, Atchison County citizens were also made to leave. While many of the citizens are having a difficult time understanding the corps of engineer’s decision to let out some water, the corps must do it in order to try to save the levees.

The corps is not taking this lightly at all. They have even started adding five additional feet to the levee section in Hamburg in order to add more protection. The policies and orders from the corps are being put into effect in order to help keep risks as low as they possibly can at this time.

Hamburg is not the only town with fears of flooding. Places in Nebraska, Missouri, and other parts of Iowa have potential threats of flooding from the Missouri River. Any rain added to that equation could mean those threats become a reality for the citizens in all of these places.

So, you think you’ve got problems as you sit in your dry home and compare satellite tv vs cable…think again. Say a prayer tonight for these people.

Former California governor and actor has announced that he and his wife Maria Shriver are headed for a split. The couple has been married for 25 years. Former Mrs. Schwarzenegger is a former TV news anchor while Arnold has just completed a seven-year long term as governor.

Divorce is brought about by many factors including incompatibility and cheating. What we don’t know is what mistakes were made in the union and who made them as everyone is tight-lipped, except on the now public knowledge that separation is going to happen.

Many couples agree that a separation is caused by neglect or lack of consideration for small things. These small matters tend to grow from the proverbial mole hill into a huge mountain of issues after a short period of time. When it is assumed that these small things do not exist they are bound to cause a lot of push and pull in a marriage.

The Schwarzeneggers said they have been praying over the matter, they have thought hard and long over it too. Now this is a mighty strong way for a couple to separate. In other marriages the duo part in a matter of seconds. It is like the parties involved want to run away from each other as fast as their now heavily built legs can carry them, yet they have been sleeping between the same set of sheets for a couple of years. It is also like one of the partners has turned into an enemy overnight and they are to be touched only by a very long pole. I think it is the intricacies presented by love and hate emotions.

However, the Schwarzeneggers situation seems different in that they have been living apart for some time now. They have worked while living apart. Now then the next concern that emerges is how they managed to raise their four children under this arrangement. They did not elaborate on this arrangement so let us spare them any speculation.

Normally, divorce and separation is associated with mourning. Okay, that is rather harsh as morning is more of that which is done when there is a death. But then even in this case something is dead. That is the third entity that had been created by the union of the two. And I don’t mean children, because even in the Bible it is written that a man shall leave his father and mother and join a woman who has also left his parents to become one. Ms Shriver was candid enough to say that it has been a trying time, atleast on her part. But we know even Arnold is feeling the cable internet bundles.

Maintaining good relations in the post-separation period is not that common. However, whenever there are children, the two seniors must part on good terms and retain the same throughout. This is because they have brought other persons into the world who only know only them as their parents. Separation is something delicate can cause people to cry, fight and part ways acrimoniously. However, a more civilized approach can downplay these and spare the children any hatred that may have been created by the separation.

The strength of the future relies heavily on communities and the prowess of organizers to work together to form unity where there previously was none. This notion has not been more true than in recent times, when the American way of life seems to be more disjointed than ever. There are a variety of low cost resources that cities within cities can take advantage of, to bring together a united front against what separates many. Finding out what to do in regards to community gatherings can be daunting, but with a little focus, things can be accomplished in astonishing ways. Consider just three ways to unite, and you can grow from there to make strides anywhere you might find yourself living.

The first major way to unite communities is to have family dinners. A family dinner doesn’t have to include just one family, it can be a group of families coming together for the purpose of breaking bread. Breaking bread with one another doesn’t have to be a religious experience, it can be a shared experience that allows neighbors to bridge the gap from acquaintance to friendship with ease. There is one thing that unites every person in the world, and that’s the desire to be fed and not be hungry. By organizing a family dinner, you can strengthen the neighborhood beyond compare and enjoy regional favorites from across the world. After dinner, connect satellite tv and watch a movie or two. Offer popcorn and snacks.

The second way a person can help unite their community is to host a neighborhood watch meeting. These small groups of neighbors help patrol their homes and streets to make it safe. Not all people will want to join this type of grassroots movement, but it is essential to the unification of the community at large. Neighborhood watches don’t have to be vigilante groups, they can simply be a way to make sure that the streets are safe for children and adults to play, live and learn.

Lastly, consider a block party. Hinging on the idea of the first way to unite people, a block party can be a grand event. Block parties can unite full streets and can be a great way to introduce families to one another with relative ease. Even those that live in the inner cities can enjoy a great meal, and music with one another in harmony.

The preceding are just a handful of ideas that can help unite community for the greater good of tomorrow and beyond. Without the unification of our cities, the nation cannot heal from the past mistakes. Growing together by eating, drinking, and enjoying company can build a great sense of pride. As a result of these activities, crime goes down, education flourishes, and people begin to see each other as friends instead of enemies or strangers. Obviously, these types of ideas take work and do not happen over night. It’s important to realize that upon first trying these things, it might not be a grand success, so if at first you do not see results, keep on trying and moving ahead.
